Description

ROUND ROBIN WEEK

INSTRUCTORS:  RICK MARSHALL, DOLORES OSBORNE-HENSLEY, GEORGIA VAN ZYLE, JUDI WILD

Not sure what class to take first? We heard you, and we understand.

Join us to participate in our first “Round Robin” series of classes with a different class

each day. Dip your toe into the water to learn what really “rocks” your world.

This year we have assembled a team of four distinguished and talented instructors to

share with you a peek inside their classroom. You will spend one day in each of the

following lapidary-themed classrooms: Cabochons, Lampwork, Cold Connections I, and Wire I.

CABOCHONS I– Rick Marshall: This one-day class will give you the basic techniques

you need to produce beautiful, usable cabochons. This class will also work for those

with some experience but want to improve the “finish” quality of their cabochons. Class

fee covers two small slabs and a handbook.

COLD CONNECTIONS 1 – Dolores Osborne-Hensley:  This one-day class will cover the basics of Cold Connections, which uses techniques to attach metal or mixed media (other metals, paper, items, gems, minerals, stones, fossils, etc.) to other metals without soldering.  In this class you will learn to safely use several cold connection tools, such as a small torch (annealing), drill, metal cutting shears, and textured hammers to create two pieces.  If time permits, we will add a third project.  Instructions will include how to cut stenciled shapes out of a metal sheet of copper, add a design using textured hammers, elevate your creations using a simple patina application of liver of sulfur, attach a stone or cabochon and assemble using rivets and/or prongs.  In addition, you will learn how to make your own rivets out of copper wire and use them to embellish a cuff bracelet.  Class fee covers all materials and use of tools in class.

LAMPWORK – Georgia Van Zyle: Here is your opportunity to try melting glass at the

torch during a one-day class. You will learn about safety procedures and some key

information about lampworking. Your first project will be to light the torch and pull

stringers. Intrigued? Pulling stringers will familiarize you with the properties of glass

before learning to make small beads and graduating to make focal beads. Class fee

covers all materials and use of tools in class.

WIRE I – Judi Wild: This one-day class is for “ground-floor” beginners. We’ll start with

tool and wire identification and then move on to our first project, the Basic Bangle. Your

second project will be to wrap a pendant using a “30mm x 40mm” oval cabochons.

Class fee covers a comprehensive workbook, use of tools, and a practice, wire-

wrapping kit. Project Kit fee for silver will be determined at class time.

Class Fee: $100

Estimated Materials Fee: $50 to $100

Prerequisites: None

NOTE: If you are an experienced student for any of the classes included in the Round

Robin series, you are welcome to treat that day’s class as an open studio. This Round

Robin cannot be combined with any other classes during this week.
