PINE NEEDLE COILING: BEGINNER I
INSTRUCTOR: CHAR CIAMMAICHELLA
This will be a great week of learning to play outside of the box!! Depending upon student's coiling experience, class begins with mainly learning stitches. A basic beginner basket is started by coiling around an irregular shaped stone cabochon. The slant/single stitch is used to begin. Students will learn shaping, adding, and changing colors of threads. With the completion of the “beginner” basket, students will begin a second piece. Several different stitches will be taught throughout the week. Wrapping rows, adding beads, wheat stitch and diamond stitch are just a few examples of coiling patterns. Stitches can include the slant stitch, wheat stitch and diamond stitch. We will “play” with colors using our stone, threads, beads, and our patterns to make a great work of art.
With classes being a weeklong, Char can teach the complete beginner as well as experienced coilers!
Class kit supplies include prepared stone cabochon, 3 colors of waxed linen thread, large sewing needle, coil gauge, 4 ounces of pine needles, wax, beads, and instruction sheets.
Class Fee: $225.00. This fee includes your first kit.
Kit Fee: Additional kits are $80-95.00 each. Plan on coiling at least 2 pieces!!
Additional cabochons, threads, and beads will be available for purchase.
Prerequisite: None
Char is a snowbird! Living most of the year in Venice Florida and the rest of the year in Aurora Ohio. She began her weaving adventure after making her first basket more that 30 years ago. Char has attended many seminars and conventions, learning from some of the best weavers in the U.S. Twenty years ago, after making and designing many of her own patterns, she “hit the road” teaching. She taught at many weaving conventions while also showing and selling her baskets at many art shows in the Ohio area. Nine years ago, she became interested in coiling baskets using stone cabochons and pine needles. After much convincing and encouragement from other instructors, she began a new journey! She began teaching the coiling process and making her own cabochons that are the centers of her art pieces. She is particularly known for the awesome color combinations of stone, thread and beads used in her work. This is what she wants to teach and encourage her students to “weave outside of the box” and learn to PLAY! Char has taught this process at conventions throughout the southern and eastern states, as well as at many private weaving guild events.
