ENAMEL/METAL CLAY: Cloisonné Enamel on Metal Clay

Enamel is a centuries old technique of fusing glass to metal. Metal clay is a newer innovative material that takes texture beautifully, highlighting the glorious reflectivity of transparent enamel . The old and the new are combined in this innovative workshop.
Learn the workings of both Sterling Silver and Fine Silver Metal Clay with a fun and challenging cuff project. This project will cover how to create a 2-part frame with fine silver metal clay and a sterling silver textured cuff. Learn the correct way to fire your metal clay pieces for optimal performance.
This workshop will cover all the information needed to create a beautiful cloisonné enamel design within your fired fine silver frame. We will cover wire bending, washing your enamels, blending, layering and the differences between enameling on sheet silver vs metal clay and what needs to be done to insure success! Grinding, finishing and polishing are a large part of a complete cloisonné piece and we will cover all of those. Finally, using tube rivets to attach the cloison to the sterling silver cuff will finish it all off!
A beautiful pair of basse taille enamel earrings will be created along with the cuff for the perfect duo!
The materials fee will cover all of the sterling silver, fine silver, cloisonné wire, enamels and use of tools to complete your project.
Class Fee: $250
Materials Fee: $150-$225 depending on silver and enamel price fluctuations.
Prerequisites: Prior experience with metal clay or enameling or both would be helpful, but not required.
Terrance Hickey – Combining the past with the present
Terri Hickey is a Cleveland based artist working in Metal Clay & Enamel. She graduated from the University of Illinois in fashion manufacturing and worked designing & developing clothing lines for various companies. In 2009, she was introduced to Metal Clay, fell in love, and began taking classes and workshops from well-known metal clay artists. Her fascination with glass soon led her to explore enamels. Since then, she has worked with some of today’s leading enamel artists. Terri adores working with the glass and her strength is her creative use of color. This is showcased in her pieces and her abstract designs. Her metal clay and enamel designs are influenced by her desire to create cloisonne pieces that are “everyday wearable” while keeping true to the century’s old techniques of enameling. Cloisonne looks the most glorious in the sunshine! “Wear it every day” is Terri’s motto!
Terri teaches workshops in Cloisonné and Metal Clay at conferences, various art centers and her own private studio. She is also an artist on staff at the Orange Art School District in Orange, OH.
When Terri is not creating jewelry she can be found trying new recipes, hanging with her Granddaughter and traveling.
