Description

JUNIOR ROCKHOUNDS (13-18) INSTRUCTOR: MIKE HARRISON, SHELLEY CURRAN (ASSISTANT)

This will be a fun week studying the three types of rocks and earth processes that create them. Gemstones, birthstones, and anniversary stones will also be discussed, and examples will be studied. Samples of some will be collected to add to each child’s collection.

Each student will be starting their own collection of rocks, minerals, and gemstones. We will learn how to catalogue their collection. We will learn the basics of the periodic table and how minerals differ because of their chemical composition. We will study precious metals with a field trip to pan for gold. The field trip costs are covered in the class fee..

We will also take a microscopic adventure into the world of sand and the different types we find in the world around us. Each student should bring sand samples from their area. It can be river sand, play sand, road sand, or beach sand from their vacation. We will have time to cover other topics as the students’ desire.

Class fee covers the cost of the workbook, supplies, field trip costs and gas for the field trips.

Class fee: $75                                                                                                                                                                                              Estimated Materials Fee: $0
