SILVER I: CONCEPTS
INSTRUCTOR: LAURA COX
This class will cover the basic techniques of working with sterling and fine silver including safety and proper use of tools, fabrication, including sawing, filing, forming, hammering, stamping, and annealing, as well as soldering (paste, wire, and chip), pickling, and finishing by oxidizing, polishing, and cabochon stone setting. Techniques will be discussed and applied through projects including post earrings, pendant with cabochon, and soldered chain for either a bracelet or necklace. If time allows, a subsequent ring project will be explored based on newly learned skills from the week and students’ creativity and ability.
If you have your own cabochons, feel free to bring them. The school supplies the basic tools, but you may bring your own if you prefer. We suggest bringing an Opti visor if you have one. The lab fee includes the first project and expendable items such as flux, solder, sandpaper, saw blades, patinas, polishes, solder brick, and printed materials. The cost of silver will be based on market price at the time of the class, and all projects will be sold as project kits. Closed toe shoes are required.
Class fee: $150
Estimated material cost: $150-300
Prerequisite: None
